"We're almost there," R.L. said, catching her breath as she and Rosie ascended from the Underworld into a dilapidated temple. "Just a little further to go before the End."
She didn't look her best, but that was how things went in a dungeon-crawl. At least their prospects looked good. "Well, Rosie," R.L. asked with some maybe-premature confidence and a flirty tone, "have you given any thought to how you'll want to celebrate our victory?

The fight is brutal, and frankly not as light-hearted as earlier battles have been. The End is a pretty humorless opponent, and it didn't play along with R.L.'s prediction that it would mimic their weaponry. R.L. has had to run for her life, weaving in and out of that scythe's range, and she's exhausted.
"Once more, Artemis!" she calls, and a green bolt flies from her outstretched hand, homing in on The End with deadly accuracy. Its body seems disrupted, and R.L. thinks maybe they've won... but the entity roars and charges. R.L. is out of energy, out of arrows, and out of time. The fight seems to be done.

And she'd had such a good feeling about it.
