Then again, when it came down to it, Kabru chose to try and talk to him, rather than to kill him outright, and that esteem had to come from somewhere; in the end, Kabru did think there was hope that Laios could be talked down. He doubtless thought there was enough good in him to try to save, and... this would fall in line with that thought.
