It's entirely possible that while he gets his coffee Squall gets a wink and cocked brow from the barista, a murmur of "He's shy" as a warning before he sits down. Which might explain why he seems so surprised, almost startled even, as he reaches for his own coffee, something pale and golden that smells very strongly of caramel.
