A mate? [She almost sounds surprised when he asks.] No. Like you; I was pack alpha. There was never a minute I wasn't thinkin' on how to keep mine safe. [There had always been something to be done. They might well have been the young wolves of the caern but they were reliable for unorthodox missions. And in those times of trouble and apocalypse looming, there was always something unorthodox that required the children of Coyote.] I had two people. My Fionn and my lass. They kept my feet planted in both worlds. I guess he would've ended up being my mate proper if it had come to it.

His forehead is pressed against hers and even in this position, she can feel the tickle of his breath against her skin. That instinct from before rears it's head; she wants to lick the line of his battle scars in deference to them.]
Impossible to resist. [And this time, the phrase has a different inflexion; an apology or an excuse being made on his behalf. Obviously, he wasn't at fault here. It was her. She had resisted the temptation so many times and in that second her eyes flicked between his eyes and his lips, tilting her head so that their noses brush and then tilted yet more to press her lips against his.]
