"I suppose growing up in a lab environment is boring by comparison," Sephiroth says with a slight smile. "I only knew scientists. And any who were interesting or worthwhile to know generally got sent away. I knew the opposite of colorful characters until I was enlisted."

Considering what he's already said, it's perhaps not surprising that he says 'was enlisted' as though it were a passive process he had no personal say in.
